Jeff Fisher, Gregg Williams and now former Eagles defensive end Clyde Simmons have joined forces in St. Louis to build what could be a defense for the ages.

Simmons, who trails only the late great Reggie White in career and single-season Eagles sacks, is the Rams' assistant defensive line coach.

"Jeff remembered Clyde when they played together with the Eagles," said Jim Solano, the agent who represents Simmons. "He basically gave Clyde the opportunity to interview for the job. He went there and they were all impressed. Gregg Williams, the defensive coordinator was impressed. And you know Clyde’s work ethic is unbelievable."

With the Rams almost certain to swap the second pick in the upcoming draft for a pile of draft choices, coaching will be more important than ever in St. Louis.

The anticipated trade has created a buzz.

"It reminds me of the time that Dallas traded Herschel Walker to Minnesota," Solano said. "They got a lot of guys and it instantly turned them into a playoff team. So hopefully everything will turn out well there. I think Jeff is a great coach. I think they’ve got a good quarterback. It looks like they’re going to pick up a lot of people in the draft. That will be great."

Overlooked.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese kidded Saturday at the NFL scouting combine the staff "guessed right" selecting defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul in the first round of the 2010 draft.

Pierre-Paul should have been the league's defensive player of the year. The defensive end batted down more passes than he dropped quarterbacks. And he had 16.5 sacks.

The really amazing thing about Pierre-Paul is the Eagles saw for themselves what he could do, yet still traded up to select 

linebacker-sized defensive end Brandon Graham, who came off the board with the 13th overall pick.

You cannot miss the play of Pierre-Paul on the South Florida game film with Nate Allen, who the Eagles chose in the second round of the 2010 draft.

Pierre-Paul is the guy wreaking havoc up front.

Look at all the plays the opposition ran away from Pierre-Paul (No. 90). Check out all the double-teams he took on. Guess who who helped create turnover chances for Allen. Hard to miss the 6-5, 280-pound guy.

The Eagles passed.

So did 14 other teams.

Time to steal a page from the Giants' playbook in this copycat league.

Study their drafts.

Do what they do.

Get the right coaches in place.

And you'll get what they get.

Super Bowls ... plural.

Is Kafka really a RB?

Vince Young arrived in Philly with a 30-17 record as a starter.

Trash his throwing motion. Rip him for anointing the Eagles "Dream Team." Insert a joke about his imposter arrested in Washington. VY won games.


Even if Young stumbled to a 1-2 record starting for the Eagles you at least figured he'd have more wins than losses by the end of the season.

Trent Edwards, who the Eagles added Thursday, is 14-19 in four seasons with bad teams.


When Mike Vick gets hurts this season - and it's inevitable - Mike Kafka would give them their best chance to reach the Super Bowl. On paper, at least.

And Kafka hasn't had a big win since he ran for 217 yards and passed for 143 and two TDs to lead Northwestern over then 17th ranked Minnesota.

TO asks Edwards to grade tights.

Edwards (6-4, 230) made 32 starts with Buffalo and one with Jacksonville after being waived by the Bills in September of 2010. The third-round pick out of Stanford hasn't matched the magic of his rookie season, when he guided the Bills to a 5-4 record as the starter. Since then he's9-15.

Now, this is classy.

DeSean Jackson autographed a football for 15-year-old Brandon Anderson, a Triangle, Va. resident battling muscular dystrophy.

Michael Vick inked a helmet for the young man confined to a wheelchair and trying not to be a burden for his single mother.

Michael & Son Services and their "Cares" charitable program for assistance, through owner Basim Mansour, met Brandon and offered $15,000 worth of work installing central air in their home and a brand new heating and AC system.

Inspiration for young Mr. Anderson.

Mansour also arranged to get the Vick helmet for Brandon, a die-hard eagles fan.

Getting some me-time before 2012 campaign.

The Eagles' 8-8 season was so wretched ownership is afraid of 

raising ticket prices.

Or maybe the decision to hold the line is to appease critics who wanted head coach Andy Reid fired.

Whatever. Make it four seasons in a row without an increase. No way the Eagles would have risked jacking up tickets prior to the 2011 season as the lockout was hanging over their heads.

“We appreciate our great fans and our loyal season ticket holders,” Eagles president Joe Banner said in a statement. “We understand that this is a difficult economy and we’re grateful that fans still turned out this season in sell-out numbers to support the Eagles. Holding the line on pricing for another year was one way we could thank Philadelphia fans for their continued support. We are looking forward to another exciting season of Eagles football at Lincoln Financial Field in 2012.”

Did he really say "another exciting season?"

The last ticket increase was prior to the 2009 campaign.

Offensive tackle D.J. Jones (6-5, 310, Nebrasksa) was claimed off waivers from Baltimore.

Jones was an undrafted free agent of Miami in 2011.

The Eagles also appointed Keith Gray their assistant strength and conditioning coach. He replaces Roger Marandino, moved on to head strength and conditioning coach of Indianapolis.

The Rams are interviewing general manager candidate Tommy Gamble, who worked in the Eagles' front office from 1988-94, according to this report.

Gamble has helped stock the roster of the NFC championship game finalist 49ers.

Gamble is the son 0f former Eagles president Harry Gamble, who also was head coach at Penn and Lafayette.
