Eagles playoff possibilities; don't lose to Washington

Basically the Eagles would win the NFC East, where they're tied with Washington and the Giants with a 6-7 record, by:

A) Winning their last three games.
B) Defeating Washington and the Giants.
Too busy to think of playoffs ...

The Eagles don't want to lose to Washington, as the Burgundy & Gold would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker and potentially the division tiebreaker.

The Eagles have a 44 percent probability of claiming the division pennant compared to 38 percent for Washington and 16 percent for the Giants, according to PlayoffStatus.com.

There are other subtleties depending on how Washington and the Giants fare in their remaining games.

The Eagles would be eliminated from the No. 3 seed in the playoffs if they lose to or tied by the Cardinals, or if the Vikings defeat or tie the Bears or the Packers beat or tie the Raiders.

EAGLES (6-7)
Cardinals (11-2)
Washington (6-7)
at Giants (6-7)

WASHINGTON (6-7)
Bills (6-7)
at Eagles (6-7)
at Cowboys (4-9)

GIANTS (6-7)
Panthers (13-0)
at Vikings (8-5)
Eagles (6-7)

Insider: Murray could be benched today

Running back controversy exploded here at Gillette Stadium last week.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport hasn't been on a roll lately with Eagles news.

But Rapoport said with authoristy this morning that Eagles head coach Chip Kelly plans to roll with Darren Sproles as his No. 1 running back and that DeMarco Murray likely will have a limited role or possibly be benched.

The Eagles are welcoming Ryan Mathews back to the running back rotation.

If Murray's role is reduced, it would suggest Kelly really isn't happy with the way the free agent acquisition fits in the offense and is anything but ecstatic that the back took his concerns to Eagles owner Jeff Lurie on the plane ride home from the Patriots game last week.

Rapoport said Murray discussed concerns about Kelly and running backs coach Duce Staley during the talk with Lurie.

Add the return of LeSean McCoy, who says he won't shake Kelly's hand, and the Eagles-Bills game today at Lincoln Financial Field could be one for the ages.

Eagles 'shipping up to Boston' ... from Providence

This the piece the Eagles listened to at the start of practices to get ready for the Patriots this week.

Nice touch although from what we understand the Eagles stayed in Providence, not Boston.

Breaking: Chip Kelly returning next year

This should set everyone worried about Chip Kelly's future at ease.

CBS Sports Insider Jason LaCanfora says Kelly is sticking around. Eagles ownership HAS NO PLANS to move on from him, for whatever that's worth.

It's basically a rewrite of recent reports although it leaves the door open for Kelly to leave, which really is not at all on the table now. Owner Jeff Lurie will have to fire him, Kelly told players his players in so many words this past week.

Kelly haters need to know that Lurie doesn't fire head coaches who have won with two years left on their contracts until they lose in back to back seasons. We would have heard about coaching candidates by now. A coaching change is a huge undertaking for Owner Jeff. Chip might not be Jeff's besty but he does have a trip to the playoffs on his resume.
