Kafka, Harbor sign; 4 picks to go

Fourth-round picks Mike Kafka and Clay Harback signed four-year contracts Tuesday, leaving just of 13 Eagles draft picks unsigned six weehks to go until training camp.
Kafka is the No. 3 quarterback behind starter Kevin Kolb and backup Michael Vick. Coaches felt Kafka (6-3, 225), the product of Northwestern, got a little bit better with each practice in the offseason. He was particularly effective in the red zone, where he routinely outperformed Vick.
Harbor (6-2, 252) faces an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster at tight end. The Missouri State product has had a difficult time learning the offense.

Rookie Nate Allen earns starting FS job; Mikell has sprained MCL

Among other items Andy Reid addressed at his end of offseason work is that Eagles rookie second-round draft pick Nate Allen would open training camp as one of the starting safeties.
Veteran strong safety Quintin Mikell, though, has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee.
Reid nonetheless expects Mikell, guard Todd Herremans (sore foot), middle linebacker Stewart Bradley (strained calf) and rookie wide receiver Riley Cooper (strained hamstring) to be healthy for the first fullstart of training cam-squad practice of training camp on July 29th.
Defensive end Victor Abiamiri (knee) and center Jamaal Jackson (knee) likely won't be cleared to practice according to the head coach.

Running back LeSean McCoy back at work for first time this week. Linebacker Omar Gaither also working.

Mikell joins casualty list

You don't mess around with a tweaked knee at a voluntary practice, which is why veteran safety Quintin Mikell exited with a sore right knee Wednesday.
Rookie wide receiver Riley Cooper (hamstring) didn't practice at all.
Coming off a Lisfranc sprain, veteran linebacker Omar Gaither took the day off rather than risk his health on the FieldTurf indoor surface.
But wide receiver Jeremy Maclin returned to practice after missing the previous day with a tight hamstring.

Eagles unoffiical alumni day

Pretty impressive alumni gathering inside bubble here.
Vermeil, his receivers Mike Quick and Harold Carmichael, and former line coach Ken Iman, of Springfield all are gathered together.
Former Eagles scout Bobby DePaul, released by the Chicago Bears, also was at the practice.

No WR tougher than Maclin

Add Omar Gaither to the list of absentees Wednesday. The good news: Jeremy Maclin (ham) is back at practice after sitting out the previous day with a tight hamstring. Maclin has missed just one day while Jason Avant and Hank Baskett have worked through every day of offseason camp.

Vermeil and Iman checking out Birds

Former Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil is here. He's checking out the red zone offense along with his former line coach, Ken Iman, who hails from Springfield.

Missing from action (MFA)

Usual suspects not here; Asante Samuel (personal business), DeSean Jackson (personal business), Todd Herremans (foot), Stewart Bradley (calf), LeSean McCoy (ankle), Fenuki Tupou (chest). Also, Jeremy Maclin is absent. He's geeting treatment indoors.

Simoni Lawrence signs with Birds

The Eagles added a little local flavor in linebacker Simoni Lawrence The product of Upper Darby High and the University of Minnesota signed a deal Tuesday with the Birds, then hit practice field.
Lawrence worked out with the Eagles last week then mulled over his options. The Hartford Colonials last week selected Lawrence in the fifth round of the 12-round United Football League draft.
The graduate of Valley Forge Military College wanted another chance I the NFL, having been released by the St. Louis Rams.
Lawrence (6-0, 230) has his work cut out. The Eagles are loaded with linebackers similar to Lawrence. The list includes Ernie Sims, Akeem Jordan and rookie fourth-round pick Keenan Clayton.
Interestingly Lawrence ran a 4.68 40-yard dash and registered a 40-inch vertical jump at the Indianapolis scouting combine. He also benched 225 pounds 21 times.
Clayton (6-1, 229) clocked a 4.66 in the 40 at the combine, produced a 41 1-2 inch vertical and 27 reps in the bench press.
Lawrence played two years for the University of Minnesota after transferring from Valley Forge Military College. He was fourth on the team with 85 tackles last season and had eight stops for loss. He also had four pass breakups, one interception and one forced fumble.

Single-game tickets on sale Wednesday

A limited supply of Eagles single-game tickets for the 2010 season likely will be available next Wednesday (June 16).

Eagles work without top players Samuel, Jackson

Pro Bowl players Asante Samuel and DeSean Jackson had more important business to take care of Monday than attending the Eagles' voluntary practice.
Voluntary is the operative word as far as the Eagles are concerned.
While there was a report Samuel had opted out because of a death in the family, privately he had already planned to take the week off.
Jackson's absence almost certainly doesn't have anything to do with the contract extension he's seeking. He's attended all of the practices up to this week. Privately it's possible he could join the team before the end of the week.
Sidelined this week are guard Todd Herremans (foot), running back LeSean McCoy (ankle), middle linebacker Stewart Bradley (calf) and offensive tackle Fenuki Tupou (chest). The Eagles simply don't want to risk them to further injury.
Safety Kurt Coleman, the seventh-round pick out of Ohio State, still isn't back due to the conflict between the Buckeyes' graduation dates and the Eagles' camp. Coleman could really use the time to get on board with the program. At the least he's the Eagles' fourth safety right now, behind starters Quintin Mikell and rookie second round pick Nate Allen, and veteran Quintin Demps.

Four-year deals for three draft picks

The Eagles agreed to four-year deals with rookie draft picks Trevard Lindley, Jamar Chaney and Jeff Owens.
Only eight of their 13 picks need deals including first-rounder Brandon Graham.

Herremans' foot sore from top to bottom

Eagles head coach Andy Reid said left offensive guard Todd Herremans had his sore foot checked out by a specialist and there are "no problems."
It sure didn't sound so cut-and-dry. Listening to Reid, Herremans has issues on the top and the bottom of the left foot he had surgically repaired last year.
"He's got a little pain in the arch and we've got to get it settled down," Reid said after Eagles practice Friday. "His pain before was on top of the foot. And this is on the bottom. It's more muscular than anything else. We'll just see how he does here. There's a chance he misses next week. But he'll be back and ready to go for training camp, even if he doesn.t"
Running back LeSean McCoy (ankle) and middle linebacker Stewart Bradley also sat out practice. Reid hasn't decided if either will participate in OTA's next week, the last team practices before training camp begins July 26 at Lehigh University.
"LeSean is doing OK," Reid said. "I just held him out. He tweaked it. It's a little deal there. He's all right. Stew is fine. He had like a cramp in his calf. I've just got to see how they feel. I mean, if they're OK, we'll bring them out and let them go. If not, then we'll hold them out."

Look for Eagles single-game tix to go on sale in a couple of weeks.

RB LeSean McCoy isn't at practice, enabling rookie Charles Scott to get more snaps. Chad Hall, as well.

LOG Todd Herremans (foot), MLB Stew Bradley (calf) not practicing. Good thing it's June 4th.

Lawrence in for "just a workout"

The Eagles worked out linebacker Simoni Lawrence, the All-Delco selection from Upper Darby High School released by the St. Louis Rams.
For now it’s just a workout.
Also at Eagles practice Wednesday, middle linebacker Stewart Bradley exited holding his left leg. The Eagles are calling it just a mild strain of the calf.
Earlier in the day the Eagles agreed to terms on a four-year deal with running back Charles Scott, the sixth-round pick out of LSU. He’s the first of 13 picks in the fold.
“I’m just excited to get it done,” Scott said. “I didn’t realize I was the first guy to finish. I’m just glad to get it over with.”
Lawrence played two years for the University of Minnesota after transferring from Valley Forge Military College. He was fourth on the team with 85 tackles last season and had eight stops for loss. He also had four pass breakups, one interception and one forced fumble.
The Eagles are loaded with similarly sized linebackers including Ernie Sims, Akeem Jordan and rookie fourth round pick Keenan Clayton.
Lawrence (6-0, 221) ran a 4.68 40-yard dash and registered a 40-inch vertical jump at the Indianapolis scouting combine. He also benched 225 pounds 21 times. Clayton (6-1, 229) clocked a 4.66 in the 40, produced a 41 1-2 inch vertical and 27 reps in the bench press.

RB LeSean McCoy has a leg issue, possiby cramps. He was clutching a knee.

More bad news. MLB Stewart Bradley exited practicr holding right knee.

Eagles rookie money grab is on

When LSU runnng back Charles Scott agreed to terms on a four-year contract, it launched the beginning of a race among Eagles draft picks to get their money under the old rookie wage pool used in capped years.
Trust me, you don't want to be one of the last draft picks to be signed other than first-rounder Brandon Graham.
The Eagles drafted more players than any team in the recent lottery. Those 13 players are battling for the fourth-highest rookie wage pot - a svelte $6.977 million.
With the looming threat of a uniform rookie wage scale in the next Collective Bargaining Agreement, this could be the last chance for some of the draftees to cash in.

Herremans has issues with surgically repaired left foot

Eagles guard Todd Herremans sat out practice Tuesday with what the Eagles are calling a sore left foot.
Herremans missed five games last year after undergoing surgery for a stress fracture in the foot. He had been golfing over the weekend and anticipated getting back into the swing of things Tuesday.
During the Tuesday Organized Team Activity held indoors, Eagles CB-FS Marlin Jackson injured his right ankle on the FieldTurf, according to the Eagles.
That was the preliminary evaluation pending X-rays.
Jackson was in considerable pain and had to be helped off the field.

Depth chart at safety

Quintin Demps, Macho Harris and rookie Nate Allen all play FS. Of course, the Eagles drafted Allen because they weren't comfortable with Demps or Harris.

Jackson throws his gloves, slams the wall

The way FS-CB Marlin Jackson punched the padded practice facility wall you could almost sense he reinjured one of his surgically repaired knees.

Veteran LB Omar Gaither is working on a limited basis for the first time since Lisfranc surgery last year. RB Mike Bell (ham) is back and a full-go.

Pro Bowl CB Asante Samuel present at Eagle OTA's, being held indoors due to threat of rain. That's important for the ever-evolving defense.
