NFL draft projected picks 1-2

1. Rams (from Titans) Jared Goff, QB, California: The real deal, small hands or not. Exceptional accuracy, lightning release and stellar feet. Even the Rams can’t screw this up.

2. EAGLES (from Browns) Carson Wentz, QB, N.D. State: Joe Flacco and Ben Roethlisberger rolled up in one. Ourlads.com clocked Wentz’s throws at 57 mph. Only Goff (58 mph) and Paxton Lynch (59) threw faster.

Maybe the Eagles can trade Mike Kafka

Name the guys who played QB since '5' left.
Former Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb could be in some trouble at Arizona, judging by reports there.

Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Tommy Kelly said Kolb looked scared in their preseason game. No one should be surprised when John Skelton emerges from the quarterback competition as the starter.

And no one should be surprised if the Eagles move another backup quarterback in Mike Kafka.

The Eagles shipped Kolb to the Cardinals for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round draft pick used to move up to land rookie first-round pick Fletcher Cox.

Kolb had moments but was never the same after sustaining a concussion in the first half of his first game as the guy. The Eagles knew Kolb couldn't play fast enough to be their starter.

Kafka's moment came when he rallied the Eagles within striking distance of a score on the road against the Atlanta Falcons. Though the Eagles profess their confidence in Kafka, they're anything  but married to the tall, mobile, rangy passer. Especially with rookie Nick Foles making big strides.

By the way, Kolb, Kafka, Michael Vick and Vince Young have played quarterback since Donovan McNabb was traded. Foles will be the fifth.

What we learned from Eagles minicamp: QBs

Eagles took a good look at Tannehill but didn't act.
Michael Vick's backup might not be on the 90-man roster.

That's the vibe I'm getting after the offseason workouts.

The Eagles are concerned about Vick's shelf life. That's why the inquired about Peyton Manning, who was coming off a major injury, took a real good look at Robert Griffin III and Ryan Tannehill, and in the third round of the draft, selected Nick Foles.

McNabb (C) would help.
Remember, it's what the Eagles do, not what they say. And if they start the season with Foles, Mike Kafka or Trent Edwards backing up Vick, they're in  major trouble should - some would say when - No. 7 sustains injury.

Spare me the counterpoint that it's the same for any team losing its starting passer. No other starting quarterback plays a style remotely similar to Vick, who also happens to be the smallest No. 1 in the league.

Not saying Foles or Kafka - and that's how I have them firmly rated  right now - cannot play in the league. Just that they're not guys I would count on to win right now. And quite frankly, I'm surprised the Eagles seem to feel this way. It's like the Phillies going into the season knowing Ryan Howard and Chase Utley aren't going to be much help.

But again, it's what the Eagles do, not what they say. Unfortunately they're also running out of time.

Statistically QB Nick Foles has 9 percent chance to succeed

Look at video of Nick Foles when the Arizona Wildcats had a senior offensive line (below) and you wonder why he dropped to the third round.

Foles doesn't play nearly as slow as the guy who ran the 5.1 40-yard dash at the scouting combine.

All of that said I'm reminded of telling research supplied NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock.

In the last eight drafts, 23 quarterbacks have been selected in the first round. Fifteen are starters.

In the last eight drafts, 82 quarterbacks were drafted in rounds 2 through 7. Only seven have become starters.

Statistically there's less than a 9 percent chance Foles is the Eagles' future starting quarterback.

A reader offered another way of looking at it (on EaglesAddict.com).

Hopefully it's a Favre-fetched rumor

Brett Favre has a good relationship with Eagles head coach Andy Reid.
Favre's aversion to NFL offseasons and penchant for delaying his decision to play another year of football has been lost in the labor dispute.
Brett Favre, approaching 42 years old, backing up Eagles whaleback Michael Vick this season?
Howard Eskin said on NBC10  Saturday evening  the Eagles could sign Favre, assuming the trade Kevin Kolb.
In terms of knowing the offense and not needing an offseason to step in and win games, it makes sense.
But the first time Vick struggles, guess what? And the second, third and fourth times.
God forbid Vick is sidelined by injury. Here we go again with musical chairs. That quarterback routine works just well enough to reach the playoffs.
The locker room definitely would be livelier with the addition of Favre. But that might not be such a good thing. Ask the Jets.
